Salary Range 16: $3,826 – $4,648/month plus benefits

Position Summary: The Legal Assistant coordinates and performs legal secretarial and office management duties in the Office of the Corporation Counsel; coordinates and provides legal assistant services to the Mayor and City Council, Municipal Court, departments, boards, and commissions; and guides and facilitates the department’s network and computerized data functions.

Requirements: Experience, education, or training which provides the level of knowledge, skill and ability equivalent to: High school degree or GED equivalent plus advance and/or continuing education courses in criminal justice or legal assistant, secretary or paralegal preparation, preferably with the equivalent of a two-year degree and two years administrative or legal experience in a court or legal office with customer service problem solving. Bilingual is desirable.

The position works independently and performs a variety of responsible administrative, legal, technical and office management duties. Work is performed independently under the general supervision of the Corporation Counsel and requires independent judgment, strong time management ability and a high degree of discretion to coordinate all activities of a legal office. Punctual, regular and reliable attendance is essential for successful job performance. The employee performs in a capacity which frequently involves the execution of specific legal work requiring knowledge of legal concepts routine in nature. Employee confidentiality in personnel/labor relations policy is essential to the position as is public relations due to frequent contact with the general public and public and private officials.
